Secret Recipe for a Homegrown Success
Take two young men raised in Orange County, add two parents convinced that the Argyros Business School at Chapman University offered the perfect education, and throw in a large dose of entrepreneurial spirit and there you have the secret recipe that has grown Absolute Exhibits into a major player in both the southern California and national exhibit display business.
Upon his early graduation as a magna cum laude dual business and economics major at Chapman University in 1999, Todd Koren, along with his younger brother and fellow Chapman business school student, Scott, approached their parents to start a family business. “The first sale was to our parents, we knew the next sale had to be easier!” states Todd Koren. The Koren sons were raised in the tradeshow business, watching their parents direct the growth of other privately held companies into overwhelming successes. Salesmanship 101 paid off and the joint family venture was off and running in high gear.
With a business plan scoured by half a dozen Chapman professors, an area map in hand circled with access from five major freeways, and a support staff of motivated and knowledgeable men and women, Absolute Exhibits opened its doors in Orange in September 2000. Operations and finance are overseen by the younger Korens, sales and rentals by their father, Michael, while their mother, Jan, acts as the director of marketing. The junior Korens bring technology and innovation to an industry that has its roots in the bazaars and markets of ancient times. The senior Korens add multi-year experience in sales, design and promotion. Each member of the family is energetic, driven, detail oriented, and competitive – all hallmarks of a successful entrepreneurial debut.
The scope of Absolute Exhibits has grown in less than two years far past the traditional “exhibit house.” Absolute prides itself as a service company, first and foremost. The scope of services encompass a complete bill of fare that includes: display design and fabrication, graphic design and production, rental exhibit solutions, full service project management, transportation coordination, on-site show services including supervision, installation and dismantle, refurbishment, and warehousing and inventory management. Sales and service have become a global affair with clients in such faraway places as Moscow, Brussels, and Hong Kong, as well as across the United States. “But, the clients we love are those right here in our backyard – they foster relationships and bring excitement into our office,” asserts Jan Koren.
With a commitment to those local customers and what the Korens perceive as a continuing need to educate their clients and prospective clients to prepare and work on the tradeshow floor, a partnership was formed with DSYL. A Fullerton-based advertising agency, DSYL, shares the same philosophical approach to business as Absolute Exhibits – business with a sense of humor added and people who really go the extra mile. Together Absolute Exhibits and DSYL are offering “How To Turn Your Next Tradeshow Into A Well Oiled Lead Generating Machine,” presented by the ladies of DSYL. This seminar is offered on Thursday, May 2, 2002 at 10 a.m. at the Absolute Exhibits showroom in Orange. The fee of $10 includes a copy of Still More Secrets of Successful Exhibiting.
