Building Company Morale from Within … thank you Toy Fair Exhibitors

Our company, Absolute Exhibits of Orange, California, like so many thousands of others, was feeling the emotional pain of September 11th. Our company philosophy is that when one person helps another person the real reward is the experience and the person really rewarded is the volunteer. Although we had already donated to various 9-11 charities no one in our company from the warehouse staff, the office staff, nor the sales staff felt that they were personally “doing” anything. And so, we began investigating our options. How could we involve all of our employees in a volunteer effort from 3,000 miles away? Our answer … Mayor Guiliani’s Holiday Toy Drive was collecting toys for the children of the victims of the tragedy. The catch was that we had two weeks to get the toys to New York. First to step to the plate – our warehouse manager, Jim Fitzpatrick, who convinced our carrier, Mayflower Transit, to supply a brand new moving van with a driver to carry our toys across the country. Now the van had to be filled. With the active participation of our entire staff we contacted all of our vendors and all of our clients. At the end of the first week we had 150 gifts – not enough to fill a pallet, much less a van.

With a spark of inspiration mixed with desperation and an empty van we went to the exhibitor show guide from the Toy Fair held in New York City every year. All of the local southern California exhibitors were called. And then it happened – as if by magic (and telephone, fax and email) came the offers. Send your company truck to San Diego, and Malibu, and downtown Los Angeles … and we did. And with a little luck and a lot of people power our staff collected over 5,000 gifts in the next seven days. This is just a note to thank all of those wonderful Toy Fair exhibitors who helped rebuild the spirit in our company and reminded all of us that volunteerism is reward itself. On an additional note – we filled the van and even sent four more pallets the following week – it really was a great Christmas.
