So here you are, the first day of your show – your exhibit looks great and your sales staff looks sharp – how can you go wrong? Well, did anyone talk to your sales personnel about approaching the attendees? How to interact with prospects and customers is key. This is not a 'dog and pony' show, where each staff person repeats a mantra about how wonderful your company is. No, it is your venue to reach the largest possible audience in the shortest period of time and to learn as much about potential clients firsthand.

In-booth dialogue skills are critical to exhibiting success. A canned speech praising the merits of your company and its products has no place in trade show marketing. Rather, by asking a few well-defined questions first, information can be presented in context with what the prospect or customer wants to hear, rather than imparting data of no value or interest.

Most importantly booth staff must immediately learn with whom they are speaking and find out what drew them into the space. This is only done by listening more than talking, learning more than teaching. Regular "sales talk", is great day-to-day, but at a trade show everyone has an agenda that they must follow in order to see as many vendors as possible – you have only a couple of minutes to catch interest and make a great impression – do not waste that time – maximize your presence on the trade show floor.
