Are you Exhibiting at the Right Shows?

Does the show bring you face-to-face with the people who buy what you sell? Begin by contacting your trade association for recommendations. If you're not involved with a trade group, find the associations that represent your industry. While you're contemplating trade associations, consider trade shows that cater to your customers' industry, rather than yours. That is called niche marketing.

An example is the Pizza Show - for attendees that sell pizza. Pretty simple - but what about music, games, pool tables, beer? Or in our case - a client that sells chicken wings? Interestingly - pick a show outside your industry and you may find few competitors.

It's an opportunity to focus on niches within your market. An insurance broker whose clients increasingly come from a particular industry, such as electronic manufacturing, may find that attending an electronic manufacturer's trade show is an effective way to demonstrate that he "understands your industry." He also may find few competitors. Don't forget the Internet when researching. Many Internet sites list not only trade organizations, but also upcoming shows.

Successful exhibiting really depends on whether you set realistic expectations. How many people can you reach in how many hours? The average good booth staffer can speak to six to 10 people an hour. Multiply that by the number of show hours. Then, compare how long it takes your company to reach a similar number of prospects through direct mail or advertising. How does the cost per thousand compare? What's the sales conversion ratio-how many contacts turn into buyers? The greatest benefit of trade shows is that you are dealing with far more qualified people face-to-face. And these people have buying power - no one has the time or money to come to a trade show just to be a Looky Lou. Tradeshows are far more serious a business venue today.
